Although non-ferrous metals are typically more costly than ferrous metals, they are utilised because of their advantageous qualities, such as their low weight (aluminium), high conductivity (copper), non-magnetic nature, or corrosion resistance (zinc). Some non-ferrous minerals, like bauxite, which is used as flux in blast furnaces, are utilised in the iron and steel sectors. To create ferrous alloys, other non-ferrous metals such as wolframite, pyrolusite, and chromite are utilised. Many non-ferrous metals, however, are less suited for high-temperature applications due to their low melting points.
Ferrous metals are distinguished from non-ferrous metals by the presence of iron. Since ferrous metals, including carbon steel and cast iron, contain a lot of carbon, they are typically more prone to rusting when exposed to moisture. Wrought iron, on the other hand, is impervious to rust because of its purity, while stainless steel is shielded from corrosion by the presence of chromium.
